BASKET:
First work bottom of basket back and forth on circular needle, then pick up sts along the sides and continue in the round.
Cast on 38 sts on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8 with red. Work stockinette st back and forth until piece measures 39 cm / 15 1/4" (adjust so that the last row is worked from RS). Keep the 38 sts on needle, pick up 43 sts from RS along one side (i.e. pick 1 st in approx every other row), then pick up up 38 sts in cast on row and 43 sts along the other side = 162 sts. Continue in stockinette st in the round, AT THE SAME TIME on first round dec 5 sts evenly on each of the 43 sts picked up = 152 sts. Continue in stockinette st until piece measures approx 58 cm / 22 3/4" from where sts were picked up. Continue as follows in off-white: P 1 round, K 1 round, P 1 round and bind off loosely.

FELTING:
Wash basket in the washing machine at 40C/104F with a detergent free of enzymes and optical bleach (usual spin and no pre-wash). Shape and leave to dry.
At subsequent washes wash basket at a wool programme.

Fold top approx 8 cm / 3" towards RS.
