Gauge: 23 sts and 30 rows on larger needle in pattern = 10 x 10 cm [4» x 4»]
Border 1: Knit 2 cm [0.75»] stockinette st, purl 1 row (= folding edge - measure the work from here), knit 2 cm [0.75»] stockinette st.
Border 2: Knit 3 cm [1.25»] stockinette st, purl 1 row (= folding edge), knit 3 cm [1.25»] stockinette st.
Pattern: See charts. The pattern is seen from the right side and is knit entirely in stockinette stitch.
Body: Cast on 254 (270-282) sts (including 1 edge st each side at center front) on smaller circular needles with navy and knit Border 1. Change to larger needles and knit Pattern 1, then Pattern 2 then Pattern 3. When the work measures 35 (36-38) cm [13.75» (14-1/8" - 14-7/8»)], work the next row as follows: 61 (64-67) sts for the front, bind off 6 (8-8) sts for armhole, 120 (126-132) sts for the back, bind off 6 (8-8) sts for armhole, 61 (64-67) sts for the front. Knit the fronts and back separately.
Front: = 61 (64-67) sts. Bind off for armholes every other row: 3 sts 1 (1-1) time, 2 sts 3 (3-4) times, dec 1 st 3 (4-4) times, then dec 1 st every 4th row 3 (4-4) times = 46 (47-48) sts. When the work measures 50 (52-54) cm [19.75» (20.5" - 21.25»)], bind off at the neck edge every other row: 11 (12-12) sts 1 time, 3 sts 1 time, 2 sts 2 times, dec 1 st 3 times. If Pattern 3 is finished before finished dimensions are reached, knit Pattern 4. Bind off all sts when the work measures 58 (60-62) cm [22-7/8» (23-5/8" - 24-3/8»)].
Back: = 120 (126-132). Shape armholes as on the front = 90 (92-94) sts. When the work measures 56 (58-60) cm [22» (22-7/8" - 23-5/8»)], bind off the center 36 (38-38) sts for the neck. Then bind off 2 sts at each neck edge on the next row. If Pattern 3 is finished before finished dimensions are reached, knit Pattern 4. Bind off all sts when the work measures 58 (60-62) cm [22-7/8» (23-5/8" - 24-3/8»)].
Sleeves: Cast on 48 (48-50) sts on smaller double pointed needles with navy; join and place a marker at the join. Knit Border 1. Change to larger double pointed needles and knit Pattern 1 once, increasing 4 sts evenly spaced on the first row = 52 (52-54) sts. After Pattern 1 knit Pattern 2 once, then Pattern 3. At the same time, when the work measures 5 cm [2»], inc 1 st each side of marker every 4th row 25 (26-26) times = 102 (104-106) sts. When the work measures 43 cm [16-7/8»], bind off 2 sts each side of marker and knit the rest back and forth on the needle. Then bind off for sleeve caps on each side every other row: 3 sts 2 times, 2 sts 2 times, dec 1 st 11 (12-14) times, bind off 2 sts 2 times, 4 sts 2 times. The work measures approximately 56 (57-58) cm [22» (22.5" - 22-7/8»)].
Assembly: Sew shoulder seams. Pick up approx. 95-105 sts along the left front on smaller needles with navy and knit Border 2, bind off all sts. Repeat along the right front, but after 1 cm make 6 buttonholes evenly distributed on the row (1 buttonhole = bind off 2 sts and cast on 2 new sts over the bound-off sts on the next row) -- make corresponding buttonholes on the folding edge.
Pick up approx. 110 sts around the neck on smaller needles with navy and knit border as follows: 2 cm [0.75»] stockinette stitch, with wrong side facing, change to rust (13) and purl 3 rows (= folding edge), change back to navy and knit 2 cm [0.75»] stockinette stitch, bind off all sts. Sew in the sleeves. Fold all edges over against the wrong side and sew. Sew on the buttons.
