Crochet lessons

Please note that we have used british english crochet termonology in this guide!

Never crochet before? No problem, with these easy to follow instruction you’ll be on your way in no time!

How to begin (Back to top)

Slip knot to begin with:

Place the short yarn end under the long end...
...and inset the crochet hook down through the loop and catch the yarn. Pull the long end through the loop and tighten.
The loop should glide effortless on the hook. This is the first st.

How to hold your crochet piece:

Pencil method:
Hold the crochet hook as if it was a pencil, in your right hand two inches from the hooked end between your right thumb and index finger and let it rest on your right hand’s index finger.
Knife Method:
Hold the hook between your thumb and index finger two inches from the hook end, resting the end of the hook against your palm place the crochet hook in your right hand as you would a knife. Place the thread over your left index finger, down into the hand and keep it in place with the help of your little finger.

Chain stitches (Back to top)

With the hook in your right hand, hold the slip knot between your thumb and middle finger on the left hand. Move the hook under and over the yarn, with the yarn held in the hook. Pull the hook and the yarn back through the slip knot to form the first chain stitch.
This is what your row of chain stitches will look like. Keep going until you have the number of chains stated in your pattern. When counting stitches, do not count the stitch on the hook, see illustration.

Slip stitch (single crochet) (Back to top)

Insert the hook through stitch as shown in illustration. Wrap the yarn round the hook and pull the hook and the yarn through both stitches.

Double crochet (Back to top)

Skip 1 chain stitch and insert the hook under the top loop of the 2nd chain stitch (a)

Wind the yarn around the hook and pull it through the first chain loop, leaving two loops on your hook (b)

Wind the yarn around the hook again and pull it through both loops (c)

Do the next stitch. To do a row of dc, continue to the end of chain stitches.

Obs! For the following rows of dc, turn the piece and make a chain stitch. This is the turning chain and counts as the first dc.

Dc’s are usually crochet under both loops from previous row.
You may also crochet in the front or back loop only which will give a stripy/textured look.

Treble crochet (Back to top)

Half treble crochet (htr), Treble crochet (tr) and Double treble crochet (dtr).

How to crochet a half treble crochet (htr):

Wrap the yarn round the crochet hook (a)

Insert the hook under the top loop of the second chain stitch and wrap the yarn round the hook (b)

Pull the yarn through the chain loop only leaving 3 loops on your hook. Wrap the yarn round the hook and pull through all 3 loops (c)

How to crochet a treble crochet (tr):

Wrap the yarn round the crochet hook and insert the hook under the top loop of the third chain stitch (a)

Wrap the yarn round the hook and pull the yarn through the chain loop only, leaving 3 loops on your hook (b)

Wrap the yarn round the hook again and pull through the first 2 loops only (c)

Wrap the yarn round the hook again and pull through the last 2 loops (d)

You’ve now made a treble crochet. Continue working tr into the next and all the following chains to end of the row.

Double Treble crochet (dtr)- Wrap the yarn twice around the hook and continue as explained for tr (a). After (c) pull thread through two sts again, before (d)

Increasing (Back to top)

Single increase across a row:
Work 2 stitches into the one below.

Multiple increases at start of row:
Add the number of increased stitches needed to the number of turning chains being used, turn the piece and work into the new stitches.

Multiple increases at the end of a row:

(a) To make the first additional increase stitch, insert the hook through the lower part of the last stitch made and

(b) wrap yarn round the hook and pull through = 2 stitches on hook. Wrap yarn round hook again and pull through both loops. Continue inserting the hook into the base of the stitch just completed to work the required number of additional stitches.

Decreasing (Back to top)

Multiple decreases across a row:

Skip 1 st in the row below the number of times required in the pattern instructions.

or

(a) or work together 2 double crochet by inserting the hook in the first st on previous row, wrap yarn round the hook and pull yarn through the st (2 loops on hook). Insert the hook into the next st on previous row, wrap yarn round the hook and pull yarn through the st (3 loops on hook)….

(b) wrap yarn round hook again and pull through all 3 loops.

Multiple decreases at the start of row: Work slip stitch over each stitch to be decreased and continue the row in pattern.

Multiple decreases at the end of row:
Work in pattern until you reach the stitches to be decreased. Leave these stitches un-worked, turn and work next row.
